چکیده
A 51-year-old man presented with profuse vomiting and epigastric discomfort. The patient was known to suffer from a bipolar affective disorder with previous hospitalization for psychotic depression and attempted suicide. An ECG tracing showed normal sinus rhythm, inverted T waves in leads II, III and AVF and depressed ST segments in V4–V6 (Figure 1). Laboratory investigations revealed a serum potassium of 6.4 mmol/l, urea 28 mg/dl and a CPK level of 313 IU/l (normal 15–195). An initial diagnosis of acute coronary insufficiency was made and the patient treated with isosorbide dinitrate spray to no effect. Hyperkalaemia was managed by the administration of a glucose/insulin infusion and Fig. 2. ECG tracing 4 h after admission, showing first degree AV oral sodium polystyrene sulphonate resin. Although block with intervals of AV dissociation. serum potassium level declined to 4.8 mmol/l, over the ensuing 24 h rhythm disturbances (as shown by the serial ECGs in Figures 2–4) developed culminating in refractory polymorphic ventricular tachycardia and the patient’s demise.

Electrocardiografic Changes in Seizure Disorder
Background: Seizure disorders are common in infants and children. Cardiac dysrhythmias may manifest clinically as seizure disorders which, if missed, may cause serious consequences. Objective: To investigate the electrocardiogram, conduction and rhythm disturbances in a group of patients in pediatric age group clinically presenting as various types of seizures Methods: We studied electrocardiog...
متن کاملConduction disturbances after superior septal approach for mitral valve repair.
BACKGROUND The superior septal approach sacrifices the sinus node artery, and it requires more invasive incisions into the right and left atria. Therefore, postoperative rhythm disturbances could be troublesome in patients with SSA. In this study, we evaluated perioperative and midterm conduction disturbances in the cardiac rhythms of patients who had a SSA for mitral valve repair. METHODS Fi...
متن کاملInitial documented rhythm as a predictor of survivalto-discharge rate after in-hospital cardiac arrest in a tertiary care referral institute, South India: an observational study
Objective: Survival-to-discharge rates following in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) patients remain significantly low. The use of initial documented cardiac rhythm as predictor of Survival-to-discharge is still unclear. This study aimed to assess whether the initial documented rhythm can be used as a predictor of survival-to-discharge following IHCA in an emergency department of the tertiary car...
متن کاملPostoperative Arrhythmias after Cardiac Surgery: Incidence, Risk Factors, and Therapeutic Management
Arrhythmias are a known complication after cardiac surgery and represent a major cause of morbidity, increased length of hospital stay, and economic costs. However, little is known about incidence, risk factors, and treatment of early postoperative arrhythmias. Both tachyarrhythmias and bradyarrhythmias can present in the postoperative period. In this setting, atrial fibrillation is the most co...
متن کاملThe controllability of cardiac rhythm in elderly
Introduction: Recent reports have shown that rare fluctuations in cardiac cycles are ‘forgotten’ quickly in healthy individuals and it is possible to quantify the “memory length” of a physiological time-series using an inverse statistical approach. Methods: In the present study, we assessed the effect of aging on memory length in cardiac rhythm. Results: There was a long...
